Chart News for April 18, 2012: Lionel Richie Hits #1 on Top 200 Albums

With a brand new album sitting in the upper-rungs of the charts, Lionel Richie has made an implausible comeback on the charts with Tuskegee landing to the #1 slot of the SoundScan Top 200 Current Albums chart. Read on to find out all of the details about the rest of the country albums this week!

Thanks to the primetime airing of the “Lionel Richie and Friends” telecast, Lionel Richie’s third week on the charts has him topping the charts with Tuskegee.

For the first time since 1986, Lionel Richie has the top-selling album in America. It’s his first “SoundScan Era” (1991-present) chart-topper and is also the best-selling new country album of 2012 thus far. The CBS show, which featured top country stars performing the hits from his career either solo or with him, certainly was a big factor in guiding Richie to #1 and now, he’s only a week or two away from scanning Gold with sales at 423,000. Rascal Flatts are #2 on the Top Current Country Albums chart with sales eclipsing the 190,000 mark in two weeks on the charts.

Luke Bryan tailgates & tanlines Platinum!

With scanned sales approaching 1,000,000 units, Luke Bryan officially scored platinum success this week with tailgates & tanlines attaining the official RIAA certification for copies shipped (a.k.a. sold to retail stores). it’ll take a couple more week for the scanned units to hit the mark but it is Luke Bryan’s first Platinum album so congratulates are due. EMI Nashville’s Eric Church has sold nearly ¾ of a million records with Chief while ACM Award-winning Jason Aldean’s most-recent album, My Kinda Party has hit 2.515 million sold.

Miranda Lambert "Four The Record" Offically Gold

The second half of the Top 10 of the SoundScan Top Current Country Albums chart kicks off with the Gold Four The Record album from Miranda lambert and is followed by the 1.5 million seller Own The Night from Lady Antebellum.  Miranda’s husband and fellow ACM award winner (Lady A won as well), Blake Shelton is #7 this week with Red River Blue. the album has now scanned 640,000 copies and features the #1 single in America - the third from the album - in “Drink On It.” Brantley Gilbert’s Halfway To Heaven (also a Gold record) and The Band Perry’s self-titled debut, a record which has sold 1.2 million copies.

Notables this week include Scotty, Zac Brown Band and Taylor

Scotty Mcreery’s platinum-selling Clear As Day leads the notable albums this week with Zac Brown Band’s You Get What You Give and Taylor Swift’s 4x platinum seller, Speak Now. Tim McGraw’s Emotional Traffic has moved over 200k copies while The Pistol Annies Hell On Heels has now scanned over 300,000 copies (without major radio airplay).

Other notable albums this week include Toby Keith’s Clancy’s Tavern (5,000 sold this week), Hunter Hayes’ self-titled album (3,000), Eli Young Band’s Life At Best album (4,000), Chris Young’s 300k-sold, Neon, (2,000), and Rodney Atkins’ Take A Back Road (3,000).
