Reba - "When Love Gets A Hold of You"

When Reba released "If I Were A Boy," I don't think she expected it to meet resistance at country radio but for some reason the cover of the Beyonce tune did. Rather than force that song, Reba returns to the charts with this one, Will she return to the Top 10 with it?

"When Love Gets a Hold of You" would be a good song in just about anyone's hands — after all, it's a Jon Randall co-write, and he never misses. The melody is pleasant and mellow, fitting nicely with pleasantly unadorned lyrics about a man who's in love, but is maybe too much of a man to admit it. Sure, lyrics like "It's just a matter of time / It's gonna hit you right between the eyes" aren't groundbreaking, but they don't have to be; the song succeeds in its execution, particularly with Reba's trademark voice handling it as confidently as anything else she's ever done. If this song had been around in 1993, she easily would've taken it to the top.

Maybe two "modern" songs in a row from Reba was a bit too much for some fans, especially when one of them is a pop cover. Whatever the case, "When Love Gets a Hold of You" is unmistakably Reba and unmistakably a hit. Look for this one to bring her back into the single digits once more (and, if there's any justice, watch the album's best track, "Somebody's Chelsea", repeat that feat later in the year). Because more Reba is always a good thing in my book.
