Top 40 Singles of 2008: Hayes Carll - "She Left Me For Jesus" (#29)

A popular live act around Texas, Hayes Carll moved from the independent ranks to major label status with his "Trouble In Mind" album on Lost Highway Records.  This single was his first release from the album and it certanly is worthy of being one of the year's best.

With the release of "Trouble In Mind," Hayes Carll jumped from the indie leagues to Americana's premier major label Lost Highway Records.  The first song released from the album is the ironic and downright funny "She Left Me For Jesus."  It's such a good song that it landed in the Top 30 of our favorite singles of the year.

The title was enough to cause trouble at radio stations.  Most stations in the Bible belt wouldn't touch the single with a ten-foot pole but the ones that did were rewarded with a track full of tempo and enough to get people out and dancing to the shuffle beat.  While 'Bible-thumpers' may hate it, most of the Christian world is able to laugh and love the lyrics.  Quite simply the song talks about a guy who lost the woman in his life after she became born again and left him due to his sinful lifestyle.  When she couldn't change him (most women can't ever change a man), she left. Rather than get down, he humorously takes the POV of losing his woman to another man and simply says "If I ever see him, I'm gonna kick his ass."  It's a funny, silly song and one that helps make Hayes Carll's "Trouble In Mind" one of 2008's best Country albums.
