Jennell - "Feels Like Home"

Check out the world premiere to rising star Jennell's "Feels Like Home" single from her brand new EP out today

With a unique vocal, Jennell has a strong single in “Feels Like Home,” the first single from her new EP Home. There’s a familiar vibe to the song which reminds of early Mumford & Sons or “Ho Hey” from The Lumineers but it’s still very much Jennell’s own song.

There’s a percussive pulse to “Feels Like Home” and the music video showcases a bit of her personality as the song builds to an impressive, joyful song about living and enjoying life while doing what you love to do.

Comments from Jennell about "Feels Like Home" and Her new EP Home:
Home is my new EP that will take the listener with me on my journey over the past seven or eight years. It touches on my experiences of leaving home, the longing to find a place where I belong, the struggles and challenges I faced along the way, and then finally ending with the feel-good song, “Feels Like Home.”

“Feels Like Home” captures several emotions I was feeling with my move to Nashville and is a happy ending to my journey. For the first time since leaving my home in Wyoming, I feel like I am exactly where I am supposed to be. I finally feel like Nashville is “home,” and a place where I can see myself settling down, and planting some roots.

Sadie Hart, my good friend and co-writer of “Feels Like Home,” and I got together knowing the type of song I was looking for to complete the album. We both moved to Nashville around the same time and had several of the same experiences. So writing “Feels Like Home” together was a great fit. We had a lot of fun writing together, but it was also a good “therapy” session for both of us. We were both able to really discuss what we were going through during our transition and during the first year here. We drew from each other’s emotions and experience to create “Feels Like Home.”

I recorded “Feels Like Home” at FortyOneFifteen here in Nashville, TN, with the producer Dewey Boyd Jr. We had so much for working on this record. Dewey really understood the sound I was going for on the entire album, and really took the time necessary on each song to give it the feeling needed to tell my story. The percussion on the song “Feels Like Home” was one of my favorite parts. The drummer Chris Benelli used so many unique instruments to bring the song to life. I was even able to participate in the stomps and claps, and Chris let me play the bass drum on that song. All of the musicians did an exceptional job with their parts on the song and brought something very unique to the table. We decided to throw in some toy piano (Jaymar) on several of the songs including “Feels Like Home.” I had a Jaymar when I was a child, and it was the first instrument I learned to play. So, it seemed pretty fitting to sprinkle it in on the album.

The music video was directed and produced by Matthew Lawrence at Push FOCUS Productions. Without ever previously discussing the concepts we each had in mind ourselves, we both came up with the exact same idea. It was a very ironic “fate” kind of moment. We wanted to show a journey and people joining me along the way with the ending overlooking the city that now “Feels Like Home.” I think Matthew did a great job helping me tell the story of “Feels Like Home.” The setting was so beautiful. We were in Percy Warner Park on a tree-covered road near Steeple Chase for most of the shoot, but ended at Love Circle at the top of the hill overlooking Nashville. For me, this video is really special, because several of my friends that have really helped Nashville feel like home were in the video with me. The shoot was on an extremely hot July day here in Nashville, but my friends were troopers and stuck it out for me the entire time. I couldn’t be more thankful for all of them.

The day before the video shoot, I was getting my hair done at Salon Yaya in Brentwood. I was sitting in the chair looking at the mirror, and all of the sudden my mom was standing behind me. She nearly gave me a heart attack. She knew how stressed I had been trying to pull everything together while also continuing to work, so she flew all the way from Wyoming to surprise me and help me out. I flew out of my chair, cried tears of joy and let out a huge scream which I am sure gave the hair dresser quite the surprise as well.
