With the release of every album, artists typically try to evolve more and more. And that was exactly the case for Keith Urban when making his Fuse album that will hit stores on September 10.

“It’s not like I’ve gone off and done a polka album or a screamo album,” he tells Rolling Stone with a laugh. “I just wanted to see how far I could go before it’s not me.”

For the new project, Urban teamed up with a different batch of studio cats, including Ross Copperman, producer and Dr. Dre protege Mike Elizondo, Pink collaborator Butch Walker and longtime mentor and producer, Dann Huff. Fans already have gotten a small taste of what’s to come with Urban’s latest hit single on the rise, “Little Bit of Everything.” The new tunes are said to combine big, open melodies he’s known for with surprising electro elements.

“If you put a really great, wicked drum loop under a song, you end up with something really interesting,” notes Urban when talking about his current hit. “It’s sort of industrial-punk-ish, relative to what I do … Not like anything I’ve done before.

“I really love what U2 did with Achtung Baby,” he continues. “Bono said, [Achtung Baby] had to be the sound of [U2] chopping down The Joshua Tree,’ which I thought was great. That’s where I found myself at. I can keep making the same record, but I don’t want to do that. I was recording [at a studio] one time and on the wall someone had written, ‘There’s two sure ways to lose your audience: Always give them what they want, and never give them what they want.’ It really stayed with me, because I went, ‘Well, that is the job at hand.’”

Fans who have been lucky enough to catch Urban on the road this summer may have heard additional tunes that will be found on Fuse. Urban’s Light the Fuse Tour, also featuring Little Big Town and Dustin Lynch, will continue on through the end of the year.
