Single Review: Blake Shelton - "Came Here To Forget"

The iconic star returns with topical lead single from forthcoming album for Warner Bros. Records.

At first glance, "Came Here To Forget" [lyrics here] is easily something we could have written off as the product of an artist trying to remain current. The lyrics are similar to a number of other songs and the melody is so where between Haggard and Hunt but when you dig in closer, to is one that's about Blake and his new relationship with Gwen Stefani after divorcing from Miranda Lambert while Gwen was getting over her own divorce from Gavin Rossdale (of the band Bush).

In other words, he's literally lived this song. That alone lends itself to a more passionate reading of the "pedestrian" lyrics and makes it a far more interesting song, at least from a pop culture point of view. Shelton, as always, sings the hell out of it and the song sounds great on the radio. That's enough to like most songs he does and even with a pop-ish melody, the song never forces Blake Shelton to scream over it, something he's seriously underrated for achieving with nearly every song. That's a credit to longtime producer Scott Hendricks and Shelton himself as they make sure he can sing his hits for years to come. "Came Here To Forget" is yet another winner in Blake Shelton's deep catalog of hits.
