10 Country Songs for Canada Day

Did you know that country music is as popular in Canada as it is in the USA? Well, it is and we've got a great list of 10 songs which are by and from Canadian artists in honor of Canada Day!

Do you think country music is just for the U.S of A? Hardly. Our friends to the north have some great talent and celebrate their Independence from England on July 1st. What better way to celebrate Canada Day but listen to some great country music from some talented Canadian artists.

10. Gord Bamford- “Where A Farm Used To Be.”

Bamford in his straight up country way tells the story of the 21st Century taking over what made a country. Reality setting in for the farmer.

9. Deric Ruttan- “1979”

Telling the story of coming back to your hometown and realized how much it changed, and not all for the good either.

8. Brett Kissel- “Canadian Kid”

Well this one is pretty much autobiographical to anyone from Canada. Borrowed skates, third rate guitar. Yet going out there and kicking it.

7. Michelle Wright- “Take It Like A Man”

Before Shania there was Michelle. This song may very well opened the door for Ms. Twain, not only that it’s so well written and sung but it may have done more than that from the Godmother of Canadian Music as her own music often used this music as a template.

6. Terri Clark- “Some Songs”

What does this have to do with Canada? Well other than the best female vocalist singing and a song written by Tom Douglas, Jaren Johnston, and James T. Slater just tells us how Ms. Clark can not only turn a phrase, but make it fun too.

5. Gordon Lightfoot- “Alberta Bound”

Lightfoot bridges the gap between country and folk in this song. Equal parts Hank Williams pain songs and Jerry Jeff’s train songs.

4. Stompin’ Tom Connors- “The Hockey Song”

I’m not sure if there isn’t a more appropriate song for Canada Day. It does resonate during opening night in Toronto and Montreal.

3. Tim Hicks “Stronger Beer”

This one is rather easy to explain. Canada has much better and stronger beer.

2. Dean Brody “Canadian Girls”

One might think of it as a take on The Beach Boys iconic hit “California Girls.” Well, Dean Brody takes it up a level, proving that the ladies for the Great White North are much much hotter (than many probably give them credit for).

1. Terri Clark- “Northern Girl”

Ok who hasn’t had a mad girl crush on Terri? This song, though, tells the story of a girl growing up in Alberta. Great lyrics and the twist is the best.
