Keith Urban Sued By 70s Rock Star

Country superstar finds himself as defendant in lawsuit over HSN-based Guitar Player series of instructional DVDs.

Keith Urban is in legal trouble but not for the trouble one might expect. Peter Beckett, the guitarist from the band Player (the band behind the iconic (and much-synced hit “Baby Come Back”) is suing the superstar over the use of the band’s trade name and trademark of “Player.”

Here’s the sitch: Urban has been selling a “Keith Urban 50-piece Deluxe Player Guitar Package” that was being sold on the Home Shopping Network for $399 and that the star has a DVD titled “Player by Keith Urban 30 songs in 30 Days: The Complete Guitar Experience 30-disc DVD lesson set which boasts buyers can learn 30 songs in one month, all taught by Keith Urban him self.

The lawsuit was filed in US District Court out in Los Angeles. It’s been on sale since last February and there’s a trial date set for December to review the alleged trademark violation which Beckett claims:

“Defendants’ use of the trade name and trademark Player ... are likely to deceive and will continue to deceive the consuming public,” the suit claims, according to Patch.com. “Defendants knew, recklessly disregarded, or reasonably should have known that such packaging, advertising, marketing, and promotion was untrue and/or misleading.”

Isn't that band and that song about 37 yrs old? They were a one hit wonder with the song. I doubt anybody now would even associate the song, the band Player with any of the guitars and kits that Keith is selling. The suit sounds pretty ridiculous to me and a lot of people must agree. I've read a lot of comments calling this guy an idiot and that surely he must be joking and acting desperate or trying to use Keith to get his name in the news.
