Martina McBride Honored With Beacon of Hope Award

Iconic Grand Ole Opry member's latest award may be among the star's most-satisfying awards ever handed to her.

During the 2015 Night of Broadway Stars, Covenant House presented Martina McBride with the Beacon of Hope Award in recognition of her work on behalf of the homeless and trafficked youth, joining previous recipients Jon Bon Jovi, First Lady Laura Bush, George and Olivia Harrison for the prestigious recognition. The Country superstar has used her celebrity status to empower fans through Team Martina, a global charity group that works to make the world a better place through the healing power of music. The group has raised over $300,000 through their initiatives in the US as well as funding a music education program for Covenant House in Guatemala.

“As a mother, it is heartbreaking to know there are children suffering and struggling on their own,” McBride says. “And as a celebrity being blessed to achieve success throughout my career, it is my responsibility to help. I am so humbled and proud to share the Beacon Award with the dedicated members of Team Martina. I hope this is a reminder that every effort can make a difference.”

The special event held last week also brought Audra McDonald and some of Broadway's biggest stars – Richard Todd Adams, Capathia Jenkins, Darius de Haas, Rita Harvey, Tony Vincent and former Covenant House resident Hollywood Anderson – together under the direction of lyricist and composer Neil Berg at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Covenant House Board of Directors Philip J. Andryc and Louis Rauchenberger were also honored at the gala.
