Country music star Scotty McCreery recently earned three RIAA Platinum certifications for his hit singles “I Love You This Big,” “The Trouble With Girls” from his debut album Clear As Day and for his first Top 10 hit, “See You Tonight,” from McCreery’s sophomore album of the same name. Both of his first two albums have debuted at #1 on the country music album sales charts.
McCreery’s second single from See You Tonight, “Feelin’ It” is currently Top 15 on country radio and has recently entered the Top 30 of the digital single sales chart. The American Idol champion debuted in 2011 and has sold over two million albums. Platinum certifications are for sales of over one million units or more.

for albums it's been that way since 1973 and for singles since January 1st 1989. congrats to Scotty for his success but that's nothing compared to the biggest Idol Alums Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson who both have multiple platinum albums and singles Carrie has the best selling Idol related album ever her debut Some Hearts has sold 7.4 million copies since it's November 15th 2005 release the highest selling release in the sound scan era is Metallica's self titled 1991 album which has sold 16.1 million second is Shania Twain's 1997 album Come On Over with 15.6 million over the counter sales

It is wrong to say that platinum certifications are for sales of a million or more. Certification for singles now includes streaming, therefore a song can sell a lot less than a million and still be certified platinum.
