Weekly Release Report: September 3, 2014

Mostly an indie affair as the post-labor day release schedule is a light one.

It’s independent music Tuesday this week as most major releases have avoided issuing an album the Tuesday after Labor Day weekend. The massive release schedule picks up next week with the release of Dustin Lynch and Lee Brice’s latest albums (see below for new track singles released to iTunes).

Smart labels have decided to issue some new releases so we have SaraBeth’s Obsessive EP, John Cowan’s Sixty, The Barefoot Movement’s The High Road EP and The Roy’s fourth album for Rural Rhythm Records, and perhaps the highest-profile release this week, The View.

John Cowan - Sixty (Compass Records)
The celebrated vocalist for New Grass Revival and current Doobie Brother celebrates turning 60 with a 12 track album that features a who’s who in popular music. Guests include Chris Hillman, Ray Benson, Sam Bush, Rodney Crowell, Bernie Leadon, Huey Lewis, John McFee, Jim Messina and Leon Russell, to name but a few. The album was produced by Doobie Brother McFee and takes on some iconic songs like “The Things I Havin’t Done,” Marty Robbin’s “Devil Woman,” and The Beatles “Run For Your Life.” All of it’s good and it’s hard to believe the boyish-looking Cowan is actually 60 years old.

The Barefoot Movement - The High Road EP (Independent)
This talented ‘new grass’ band takes on classic traditional songs and put their own unique spin on these six tracks. Highlights include the Celtic-like “High Road To Linton,” “Wade In The Water” (inspired by Eva Cassidy), and “Rocky Island.”

SaraBeth - Obsessive EP (Circle S Records)
Once again, the talented Texan and Baylor University graduate takes her unique talent and displays massive growth from her first album Anything Is Possible. The highlights of this EP include lead single “Nowhere With You” and the title track “Obsessive.” The other two trcks, “I Don’t Want To Wear You Home” and “Unusually Over You” hit home too.

The Roys - The View (Rural Rhythm Records)
The Canadian natives have taken nicely to their blend of Traditional Country and Bluegrass and it’s allowed them to carve a nice niche, where they’re one of the top artists in Bluegrass. The View features eleven sturdy tracks including traditional country story songs like “Those Boots,” “No More Tears Left To Cry,” “Heaven Needed Her More” and “Mandolin Man.” The duo produced and wrote each track on the record and Lee and Elaine Roy both showcase their family harmony blend and individual vocal similarities (Lee: Ricky Skaggs, Elaine: Lee Ann Womack).
