It's hard to believe that David Nail's career first got its start 13 years ago. It was then when the “Whatever She’s Got” singer first heard one of his own songs on the radio while driving through Memphis, Tenn.

“The first time I ever heard any of the songs on the radio, it was my first record deal,” he told Radio.com. “I was 21 [and] I was driving through Memphis. Ironically, it was a song called ‘Memphis.’ I had just been doing an interview with a radio station so I kind of had an idea that they possibly might play it. I’ll never forget. I was driving across the river into Arkansas to Southeast Missouri where I grew up and it came on.

“I had three or four family members that live in the Memphis area call me immediately,” he continues. “That would have had to be my first cell phone so I was already breaking the law by talking on my cell phone driving. But it was an exciting moment. It’s always a neat thing when you find out people are listening to the radio and you come on spur of the moment and their first instinct is to let you know that your song is playing.”

But the special memory is something Nail will always cherish no matter how many times a day or a week he hears some of his chart-topping hits.

Nail’s I’m a Fire album will hit stores this Tuesday, March 4.
