In a story released today in USA Today from Brian Mansfield, Country star Keith Urban talks about his approach to being a judge on American Idol.
“The environment they’re in is not Little League, but the environments these guys and girls have come from, in many cases, is Little League,” Says Urban.
The star then goes on to discuss how it is his and co-judges Harry Connick Jr. and Jennifer Lopez’s job to help guide the contestants on American Idol from that leap from Little League to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.
“Some of them feel like, ‘I’ve Made It!” To Heck with you guys and what you say. I. Am. Flying!’ And compared to where they’ve come from, they kind of are.
“We’re trying to make them artists who can make a record, find an audience, get on radio, put together a tour and have a long-term career…”
The show has done a so-so job with that in the past but some of it’s success stories come from Country Music with Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery, and Kelly Pickler among the best and brightest from the show’s previous 12 seasons. Even first year winner Kelly Clarkson has been recording Country songs (and is working on a complete Country Album for release in the future).
