On October 13, Rhett Akins turned 44. But it's not the number he will remember as much as what actually happened on his birthday night when he got word "It Goes Like This" -- a song he wrote that his rising star son Thomas Rhett recorded -- made it to the top of the charts.

"That was like the fifth weirdo coincidence to happen with this song," says Akins with laughter. "Me, Thomas Rhett nor the label seemed to have a clue that it was supposed to go to No. 1 that day. Thomas Rhett, his wife Lauren and I had dinner that night for my birthday. Thomas Rhett called me and goes, 'Dad, 'It Goes Like This' went No. 1 today!' I'm like, 'You mean it's probably going to be No. 1 on Monday?' And he goes, 'No, it went No. 1 like five minutes ago!'"

"He's hard to buy for, so we had to plan it like that," jokes Thomas Rhett.

"It was crazy to have it all work out that way," adds Akins. "To have it all work out with your son and it's No. 1 on your birthday ... I don't know how that happens!"

Akins co-wrote "It Goes Like This" with Ben Hayslip and Jimmy Robbins.
