For the second single from Keith Urban's Fuse album, Keith and his team have chosen to release "We Were Us" to radio, the powerful duet with Miranda Lambert. Being promoted by both of the artist's record labels, "We Were Us" feels like a surefire chart-topping hit.
The theme of "We Were Us" feels like a more uptemo, electronic take of Eric Church's "Springsteen." It's a song that is instantly relatable and they sing the list of phrases in the lyrics with surgical precision. The blend between Miranda and Keith is strong and while the production might be a bit too busy and loud in places, overall the single works supremely well.
What this song is not is traditional country music in any sense of the word, neither the words (it feels more like something from 80s rock/pop) but that's fine because nobody should've ever considered either Keith Urban or Miranda Lambert traditional singers, though both can sing a heartbreak ballad just as good as anyone. In the end, "We Were Us" is a radio-ready slice of nostalgia and it should be both a popular radio hit and digital single for the artists.
