Over the past several years, Lauren Alaina has grown up before our eyes since leaving American Idol. After the release of her debut album and a few hit singles, Alaina continues to evolve as a singer and performer, and now, she can add songwriter to that list as well.
While she says "the best song wins" to make her album, her new love of songwriting has been taking a front seat in her career, which has not only helped her as an artist, but also as a young girl growing up in the sometimes unpredictable music business.
“I’ve learned so much about myself and my music from sitting in those rooms and creating different sounds,” Alaina tells Radio.com. "I write about what’s on my mind. It’s like a stress reliever. I didn’t realize when I first started writing how much it would set me free from certain situations in my life. It’s incredible.”
The singer says having a hard day here and there is no longer that tough to get through, now that she has this new, inspiring outlet to turn to.
“I was having a hard day, dealing with the fact that my grandfather has Alzheimer’s, and I wrote about it,” she explains. “And then I wrote a song about my ex-boyfriend, who was terrible and the worst boyfriend I’ve ever had in my entire life, and I got a great song out of him so I can thank him for that. It’s so interesting how you can take a bad situation and make a great song out of it that somebody else can listen to and have a completely different perspective of the song and have their own meaning. That’s what’s great about it. It’s not like it’s a math problem where you have one specific answer and it’s right or wrong, everyone has their own answer and what it means to them and I love that about it.”
