Single Review: Jake Owen - Days Of Gold

Jake Owen has a string of 4 #1 hits, all from his last album Barefoot Blue Jean Night. With it time to release the lead single from his upcoming fourth album, Jake has released "Days Of Gold." Read on here to see what we think of the (very) uptempo tune.

To say Jake Owen's third album Barefoot Blue Jean Night was a success is an understatement as it produced four consecutive #1 Platinum and/or Gold hits in the title track, "Alone With You," "The One That Got Away," and "Anywhere With You," the last track becoming his fastest-rising hit to date.  All of this building towards the buzz for the launch of his upcoming fourth album for RCA Nashville, fronted by this single.

In the spirit of Garth Brooks' "Ain't Goin' Down (Til The Sun Comes Up)," "Days Of Gold" can be classified as this: a barn-burner.  It's also not like anything else he's released. There are bluesy roadhouse rock-n-roll undercurrents to the track while harmonica and banjo help balance the melody out. There are handclaps to go along with the banjos and harmonica (which is given a lead instrument treatment here).

The lyrics are not unlike Garth's song in that it's celebrating being young, wild and free. We could nitpick that the lyrics aren't saying anything new or different than other summertime songs but what separates this one is that it doesn't sound or feel like any of the other songs with similar themes. Instead it's unique in its own right. Perhaps, we could mention Dierks Bentley's "What Was I Thinkin'" but while it's easy to compare "Days Of Gold" to it's , it's no carbon copy (nor does it 'copy' Garth's song). Instead, what it we have is a rockin' good time will sound absolutely awesome coming out of the car radio and through iPods and mobile phones (just be sure to use good headphones to hear all the instrumentals in their glory).

There's simply no way "Days Of Gold" wasn't the right choice from Jake Owen to follow-up his star-making Barefoot Blue Jean Night album. With more songs like this, It's quite possible that we're witnessing the birth of yet another star. It's also a song that has to be quite fun to witiness at a live show.
