With "Wasting All These Tears," Blake Shelton's "The Voice: Season 3" protégé and winner Cassadee Pope debuts on Country Music radio airwaves with a passionate, evocative single. Originally inspired by Avril Lavigne's music growing up and in her previous life as the teen pop/punk vocalist of Warped Tour act Hey Monday, Pope hasn't lost the experienced pop/punk edge to her voice on "Wasting All My Tears." Instead, she marries that edge with the believability she had while performing songs like "Over You" on "The Voice."
The production keeps "Wasting All These Tears" grounded in modern Country music with its wall of sound featuring banjos, mandolins and fiddles baking Pope's spirited vocal about wasting time and her emotional stability on a man clearly not worth neither. It's a song about finding strength to get up, go out and move on from a time-waster of a relationship and having that strength to forget them and realize they were just love vampires, people who suck every sense of good faith and good will out of a person. These people are also called self-centered or egotistical.
While "Wasting All These Tears" is clearly a modern Country/Pop song, there's nothing here that says that it couldn't crossover into the pop realm, something Pope and her label likely had in their minds all along. Still, despite the crossover nature of the track, Pope delivers a strong sense of attitude and connects with the lyrics and that's more than enough to suggest the birth of a potential star.
