The record's key tracks like "When i See This Bar" find Chesney talking about how he was able to lose himself in the community of people in the Virgin Islands, "I had a group of people I became great friends with," Chesney says. "It was completely different from the life i had built on the road and here (in Nashville). They didn't know what I did or they knew and didn't care." It's a song about that place we all can go to, that place to hang out with your circle of friends, for Chesney "it was a beach bar"

Kenny talks about "Lindy" and how the song wasn't supposed to even be on the record, "I can't believe the lyric that I wrote for "Lindy" is going to be on a record, that I wrote a song about him and people are going to hear it," he says. "That was never the intent. It was just an expression of this person I never really had a conversation with, and Idon't may people that did have a conversation with him. He was always just a staple of the island, just a brush stroke that can give an island a heart, charm and soul down in the Virgin Islands." He goes on to say that the song serves as a reminder that beneath a person's exterior, there's often a good person with their own unique story.

The title track "Life On A Rock" is a song that talks about how the island revitalize Chesney's batteries in a way he never expects and how that life is a chosen one that inspires him, "The idea of (the island citizens) taking their life, color outside the lines of it, on purpose, is just inspiring."

The album is a reflection of Chesney's life and it's quite clear from hearing him discuss the track that he's more aware than ever of his life and what makes himself tick and while that island may be his "pirate flag" where he can let things go and relax, he knows that a lot of these stories on Life On A Rock can be ported into people's own lives, no matter if they ever live on a small rock like an island or this bigger rock that is Planet earth.
