Album Review: Rosehill - Crooked Thoughts

Rosehill is a talented duo arriving on the national scene from Texas. Signed to Tenacity/Cypress Creek, the duo worked with Jay Clementi and Radney Foster to craft this, their sophomore album. Read on here to find out what we think about this new record.

The album starts off with the title track, a tune that Mitch co-wrote with Jay Clementi. the melodies are brilliantly atmospheric with vocals that are, dare I say Mavericks-like in the way the harmonies of Mitch and Blake blend together.  There's a groovy feel to "All Worng But Just Right" that recalls classic country rock without feeling like imitation while "Believe Me" is an old school vocal torch ballad that few bands are willing to tackle. The duo wrote it with Jay Clementi and Alex Wooden.

"Did You Ever Turn Around" is another strong harmony-driven track. The production from Jay Clementi allows the duo's vocals to lead the way as they sing passionately about a regret in a departed relationship while "The Bible And The Gun" is the kind of song that should be played on Mainstream radio. The story is fantastic and Mitch and Blake's true duo voices blend brilliantly on the track of choosing life over a quick out. Anyone who has contemplated suicide or lost someone to suicide will likely relate to this song.

"Shotgun Out Of Town" has a cool laid-back mandolin and slide guitar melody that helps the duo sing a lyric about a young couple leaving the small hometown behind on their honeymoon and later for their life. "Playing For Pride" is a song about standing out and making your name, no matter the situation in life. "Ready For Fall" sounds tailor made for country radio while "That's How I'm Going Out" clearly doesn't with the story song lyric and waltz melody.

Everything about Rosehill suggests a duo that has more musicality than a lot of other duos in Country Music (or groups for that matter). The songs lead the way here and that dictates that Crooked Thoughts is one of the most sonically pleasing albums I've had the chance to listen to these past few months. Here's hoping they're able to find a mainstream niche in Nashville in addition to their growing stardom in Texas.
