Written by David Lee Murphy and Ross Copperman, "Pirate Flag" has a thouroughly modern percussive beat backing up mandolins, organs and tin whistles serving as the intro until a classic rock melody (which actually recalls Murphy's own "Dust On The Bottle" in places) kicks in. This is an uptempo but suits Kenny Chesney much more than most modern raved-up rockers would. In addition, the lyrics talk about a lifestyle that is familiar to Chesney's other island songs without being something that most of his audience couldn't relate to.
"Pirate Flag" may not excite early Kenny Chesney fans all that much but for the rest of the modern Country Music listening audience it's a song that fits well within what radio is playing. This is a song that should have no trouble being a big ole radio hit.
