The rock project – being released on Columbia Records – already has the first single and title track available on iTunes. The tune is a Pink Floyd cover, which is also available on the soundtrack of West of Memphis: Voices for Justice, which coincides with the documentary film, West of Memphis. “I wanted this music to be very different from the Dixie Chicks,” says Maines. “Lots of albums by lead singers might just as well have been made by the band, but I think this is very different from anything the Chicks could make. That separation and distinction was important.”
Maines helped co-produce the project with none other than Ben Harper from his own studio. The project will also feature a song, “Come Cryin’ to Me,” penned by Maguire and Robison, originally meant to land on the Chicks’ Take the Long Way. Maines says the song was left on the table because it was “too rock” for the Dixie Chicks, “but it really felt right to have a piece of them on here,” she adds.
The Dixie Chicks are slated to hit the road this summer, hitting multiple Canadian markets along the way. A complete track listing toMother can be seen below.
