Story Behind The Song: Jason Aldean's "1994"

In 1994, Joe Diffie was dominating Country Music with hits including "Pickup Man," "So Help Me Girl" and "Third Rock From the Sun." It was also the year that 2012 Songwriter of the Year Luke Laird was developing a love for country music. Read on to learn how that love turned into this new hit!

"I was writing with Barry Dean and Thomas Rhett, and at the time when we got together, Barry and I were under the impression that Thomas Rhett's album was finished, so we weren't necessarily trying to write something for him," Laird tells Roughstock. "It was like, let's just have fun today. We started probably four or five other things. I don't know if it was a Friday or whatever, but we were just having fun.

"So we went to lunch, and then we came back," continues Laird. "I had this track that I made at Starbucks with headphones ... I have a lot of them ... beats and some musical ideas. I was going through them that day, and Barry and Thomas Rhett were like, 'What is that?' We must have been talking about 90s country people or whatever, because I'm such a huge fan of all that stuff. I know endless 90s country music trivia because that's literally the reason why I moved to Nashville."

We just started talking about Joe Diffie and all hit songs ... that dude has had a ton of hit songs," Laird says. "He's a platinum-selling artist and really is one of the greatest country singers to ever come through Nashville. We got a kick out of writing that against a hip-hop beat. While we were writing it, we kept saying, 'Is this too crazy?' But for me, when I'm writing songs, I like that feeling. At least I know it's not boring and it keeps my interest. I don't want to just write something straight down the middle. We wrote that, and when we got to the chant part, we were just having a blast. It was so much fun."
