Single Review: Charlie Worsham - "Could It Be"

In 2011 country music witnessed the arrival of a talented singer/songwriter in Hunter Hayes. Now that he's a star, there's another multi-instrumentalist artist on the rise in Charlie Worsham. Read on to learn what our writer Bobby Peacock has to say about Charlie's debut single "Could It Be," here.

Jackson, Mississippi native Charlie Worsham was honored by his state at age 14 for his contributions to the musical field. His résumé includes names from Jimmy Martin to Taylor Swift. His YouTube channel hosts a recurring series in which he attempts to learn a song in 24 hours, playing every instrument from guitar, banjo, and mandolin to improvised percussion, and every song from "East Bound and Down" to "Gangnam Style." Overall, it's obvious that he's not lacking in talent.

And of course, that talent is in full force on his debut single, "Could It Be." Throughout, he asks his lover if their relationship is headed in the direction of anything resembling love, of if they'll "go down in flames." Worsham's easygoing charm sells the song, his range and phrasing recalling Marty Roe of Diamond Rio; in fact, the song even has a similar chord pattern to "Meet in the Middle." The song also excels in its tight production, courtesy of veteran songwriter but rookie producer Ryan Tyndell. Strong acoustic guitar riffs and tight percussion are the main focus here, never getting overly loud or overpowering his voice.

While Hunter clearly has the pop-leaning audience captured quite easily with his style and diverse musical skill, Charlie Worsham's material suggests a more neo-traditionalist bent. So now, the only question here: is this the start of a very fruitful career, or could it be?
