Single Review: Brett Eldredge - "Don't Ya"

He hit the charts in 2010/2011 with "Raymond" and is now back with "Don't Ya," a spirited slice of country/soul. Read on to see what our writer Kyle Ward has to say about this just-released single that should be followed in 2013 with Brett's Atlantic Nashville debut album.

The song starts out much like Blake Shelton’s “Drink On It”, with a man throwing pickup attempts at a woman – and coming on a bit strong. The second verse is much more subtle though, and through details like “Yeah I bet you didn't mean to brush my hand when you walked by me” he effectively details the mutual flirtation. For his part, Eldredge sings the hell out of it. The soul influences are a new direction for Eldredge, but he nails them with a charming and seductive vocal in the style of James Otto. Eldredge has already recorded a number of ready-made radio singles for his upcoming debut album, he just needs that breakthrough hit to launch him and he can be a star. Warner/Atlantic is banking on this being just that, and although I have a few lingering doubts, it’s nonetheless another solid strong effort Eldredge.
