Hunter Hayes Wrote "Wanted" From A Love Letter He Never Sent

The original idea for "Wanted" came from a love letter to a friend. Like any good songwriter, Hunter turned the unsent letter into a song and has proceeded to see it become his breakthrough hit and an early signature single. Read on to learn more about how the Platinum Hit came to be!

Speaking about his mindset at the time, Hunter tells ABC News Radio, “I just want to hang out with this girl.  Relationship or not, I really enjoy the company.”

Surely any girl who has a song like “Wanted” written about her would just melt and say yes to a relationship, right?  Hunter can’t say for sure.

“It didn’t work ’cause she doesn’t know that the song was written about her,” he admits.  “It’s totally cool.  I got a song out of it.”

As he was recording “Wanted,” the song became a dream list of all the things Hunter wants to feel when he embarks on a new relationship.

He says, “It’s got to feel like that.  It can’t just be a need scenario.  It’s got to be a sort of, you know, just enjoy your company sort of scenario.”

The single was recently certified Platinum this week with sales of the track surpassing the 1,000,000 copies sold (to fans, not stores).

"I cannot believe I'm celebrating a Platinum single in the Top FIVE!” said Hunter when asked to describe this exciting success. “I've been dreaming about what this would feel like my entire life...and HUGE thanks to Country Radio's support and the BEST FANS in the WORLD, I now know that it feels better than I ever imagined. Thank you!"

"Wanted" entered the Billboard and Country Aircheck/Mediabase Top 5 this week. The song is the follow-up single to nearly-Gold Top 15 hit "Storm Warning." Both tracks can be found on his Self-titled Atlantic Records Debut.

"Wanted was certified Platinum this week.
