Chart News For June 20, 2012: Josh Turner - Not A 'Punching Bag' After All

Josh Turner Knocks Out All Contenders with New album, returning to #1 on the country charts for the first time in six years!

45,000 albums sold was enough for Josh Turner to arrive at #1 on the SoundScan Top 200 Current Country Albums chart, the first time he's done so since 2006's Your Man. Josh's new album Punching Bag features the hit "Time Is Love" and 11 other strong tracks.

Alan Jackson surpasses 110,000 in just two weeks!

Once again Alan Jackson showcases that his career has some new life as Thirty Miles West, his debut for his label ACR/EMI Nashville. Luke Bryan'stailgates & tanlines has sold nearly 1.2 million copies and features three platinum-plus sellers ("I Don't Want This Night To End," "Country Girl (Shake It For Me)" and "Drunk On You." The latest edition of the Now That's What I Call Country Music series (Volume 5) debuts at #4 this week with 25,000 copies sold. Rounding out the top five country albums this week is the multi-week#1 Blown Away from Carrie Underwood. It has now sold 569,000 copies in seven weeks on the charts. The title track has been confirmed as the second single, following #1 lead single "Good Girl."

Lionel Richie's Tuskegee Leads #6-10

Richie's comeback and first country album sits at #6 this week and the Platinum Certified record is only 115,000 copies away from having scanned a million units. The record is such a success that a follow-up collection is probably already in the works for the hall of fame talent. The album also gives country music six of the SoundScan Top 200 Current Album Chart's Top 20 and with Eric Church's Chief sitting at #21, giving country music 1/3 of the top 21 albums in America more than any other genre (outside of the catch-all "pop" genre). Jason Aldean's "My Kinda Party" sits at #8 on the Top Country tally and #23 overall. The record, which will soon be joined by its follow-up on this chart, has sold over 2.6 million albums since being released in 2010. Edens Edge debuts at #9 on the country tally with their self-titled debut album having sold 9,000 copies. Rascal Flatts rounds out our top 10 with Unstoppable returning to the Top 10 for the first time in a few weeks. 

Kip Moore, Lee Brice & Hunter Hayes Lead Notables

With another 9,000 copies to his credit, upstart Kip Moore has now sold 123,000 copies of Up All Night, his debut album which will soon send "Beer Money" to country radio as the follow-up to the #1 hit "Somethin' 'Bout A Truck." Fellow newcomer Lee Brice's breakthrough album Hard 2 Love follows Kip Moore on our tally with the singer/songwriter having sold 134,000 copies since being released two months ago. Mary Chapin Carpenter's latest Zoe/Rounder offering debuts with 7,000 sold while Blake Shelton's Red River Blue is over the 700k scanned mark as fourth single "Over" flies up the charts to try and join the previous singles ("God Gave Me You," "Honey Bee" and "Drink On It") as #1 hits. Hunter Hayes' self-titled album features the hits "Storm Warning" and "Wanted" and now sits at #92 on the charts with 140,000 albums now in the hands of fans.  Also of special note is that 21 of the Top 80 country albums this week were country related releases, giving the top-rated genre over 1/4 of the best-selling albums in the USA.

Other notable albums this week include Lady Antebellum’s Own The Night (8,000 copies sold this week), Jana Kramer's self-titled debut album (7,000)Brantley Gilbert’s Halfway To Heaven  (7,000), the new Backroads/Average Joes’s Mud Digger 3 compilation (5,000), Scotty McCreery’s Clear As Day (5,000), Chris Young’s Neon (3,000), and Jake Owen’s Barefoot Blue Jean Night (3,000).
