Chart news for February 1, 2012: Tim McGraw's Emotional Traffic #1; Pickler's 100 Proof #2

The long-delayed, oft-contested release Emotional Traffic finally saw the light of day and with it, it gave Tim McGraw yet another milestone to add to his list of accolades. Read on to see how the other albums fared this week on our wee

This week, Tim McGraw scores 13th Career Country Album Chart Topper while Kellie Pickler’s traditional 100 Proof debuts at #2.

It was an album that fans have long hoped to get their hands on and while the time finally arrived, it’s hard to see the debut of Emotional Traffic as the normal album sales success it would’ve been had Tim’s record label not been ‘holding the record hostage’ for roughly two years (they released Number One Hits in 2010 instead). This likely contributed to the album selling roughly one-half of what the past studio album Southern Voice sold at retail. Some fans simply didn’t want to buy Tim’s album because it was released by Curb Records. Still, sales were good enough to hit #1 while single “Better Than I Used To Be” still has an outside chance of hitting the Top 10 before Tim signs a new label partnership and releases his own new material. That’s a shame too because Emotional Traffic is one of McGraw’s best albums in a long time.

Kellie Pickler’s 100 Proof gamble is paying off

While “Tough” didn’t exactly light up the radio or digital singles chart (it’s sold 143,000 singles to date), the song did help get fans aware of Kellie’s new project 100 Proof and it’s more traditional-leaning sound. The singer’s more of a celebirity than a radio star – a theme that is increasingly helping artsts sell records w/o radio help – but secondary stations are playing the title track (Top 30 at Music Row in 4 weeks, over 1800 plays) – so fans should begin to hear it at big market stations soon. Joining Tim and Kellie in the Top 5 this week are Luke Bryan with Own The Night. The record gained 18% in sales over last week while Lady Antebellum scored a nice 9% Boost with Own The Night. Jason Aldean’s My Kinda Party rounds out the top 5 and it had a slight 6% sales boost this week as well (all sales #s for Top 5 are below).

Toby Keith &Scotty McCreery lead notable albums this week

The album may have slid from #1 to #6 on the SoundScan Country Albums Chart this week but that didn’t stop Toby Keith’s Clancy’s Tavern from nearing the 400,000 copies scanned mark. The album’s second single “Red Solo Cup” also officially broke into the Top 10 this week, becoming the first Toby Keith album to feature two Top 10s since 2009’s American Ride. Scotty McCreery’s Clear As Day may not yet have a Top 10 hit but it has two Top 20 hits with “I Love You This Big” and “The Trouble With Girls.” He’s now sold 901,000 copies of the album to date.

Eric Church’s Chief Still Selling Strong, Hunter Hayes Gains

Blake Shelton experienced an 84% sales increase this week for Red River Blue as the album sold strongly while Eric Church’s Chief remains a solid seller as well (he’s about 46,000 copies ahead of Blake).  Hunter Hayes rounds out our notable albums this week as his album scored a strong sales increase as well. Other notable albums include The Band Perry’s The Band Perry album (11,000 sold), Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (8,000 sold and out of the Top 10 for just the second time since being released 66 weeks ago), Brantley Gilbert’s Halfway To Heaven (8,000) and Four The Record, You Get What You Give, & Number One Hits from Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown Band and Tim McGraw, respectively each moved 7,000 copies this week. Rounding the rundown out is the various artist compilation Now! Country Ballads which sold 6,000 copies in its debut week on the charts.
