There’s no denying it.
The release of new Carrie Underwood is a major event in country music.
Performed first for country radio tastemakers (program directors/music directors and jocks) at 2012’s Country Radio Seminar, “Good Girl” is the lead single of her upcoming fourth album and it immediately created a buzz on the internet with the live performance captured (watch here) by one of those tastemakers.
The song, which Carrie co-wrote with Ashley Gorley and Chris DeStefano, shimmies and shakes with 1980s style hand claps and a pop-leaning melody while the lyrics find her saying to a ‘good girl’ that she needs to pay attention to the deeds her man is actually doing and that he’s ‘no good’ for her and that the girl should leave her man. Tammy Wynette, Carrie Underwood is not.
While the song isn’t remotely ‘traditional country’ and isn’t too far removed melodically from the rhythmic pop songs that are dominating pop music airwaves right now, there’s also no denying the fantastic vocal delivery Underwood provides on “Good Girl.” Without a shadow of a doubt this is the best uptempo vocal that Carrie Underwood has given country radio, including “Last Name” and “Before He Cheats.” This song, while thematically similar to “Undo It,” also rivals “Before He Cheats” as the best-written tempo song of Carrie’s career.
All of this adds up to a song that is destined to scream to the top of the country charts and most likely it’ll find a home on the AC and Top 40 stations too (without remixing as the song’s country elements like steel guitar and fiddle are buried deep in the mix).
This is an event record and one that is undeniably catchy and worthy of becoming an earworm, even if it’s got more to do with current pop music than it does current country songs.
