Album Review: Jason Crabb - "The Song Lives On"

On this collection of live songs, Southern Gospel artist Jason Crabb showcases why he helped his family band The Crabb Family take off before going solo and scoring with a Dove and Grammy Award winning album in 2009.

Once the lead male vocalist for his family band The Crabb Family, Jason Crabb has segued nicely into a solo career in which his self-titled solo debut album scored a Grammy Award for Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album. To follow that album up, Jason collected 18 songs (one which is a strong medley of “I’ll Rather Have Jesus,” “I’ll Take Jesus,” and “Unclouded Day”) and invited some of his friends and family together for a couple of performances on The Song Lives On.

There’s not a bad song on the album and it’s pretty much guaranteed that if you like gospel and country music that you’re likely to LOVE this album, particularly songs like “Until Then,” “Through The Fire” (with The Crabb Family),  “Who I Am” (with Sonya Isaacs Yeary and Becky Isaacs Bowman of the Isaacs), a cover of Hank Williams’ “I Saw The Light” and “Midnight Cry.”  All are strong songs and showcase Jason’s fantastic soulful southern voice and great songs of Faith. “Sometimes I Cry,” (listen) won the Dove Award earlier this year for “Song Of The Year”

There is a pair of songs that feature some very, very special guests. These songs include “Why Me,” a Kris Kristofferson masterpiece that features Oak Ridge Boys icon William Lee Golden and Gospel legend Bill Gaither (Whose Gaither Gospel Series sponsored the album). It’s a great collaboration that just begs to be listened to. The final track on the record is “I’ve Never Been This Homesick Before,” and it features The Crabb Family, Sonya Isaacs Yeary, Becky Isaacs Bowman and Charlotte Ritchie. The song, a Dottie Rambo classic, is a jovial piece of music and that’s the best kind of Gospel music, isn’t it?

A fantastically performed live show, The Song Lives On is the exact kind of blend of classic and new songs that makes for a great spiritual evening watching the DVD or driving to and from work while listening to the CD in your car.

You can order the album and DVD at Jason's Website or Amazon mp3 or iTunes.
