In remembrance of the tragic events that took place on 9-11-2001, we've pulled together a playlist of songs that run the gamut of emotions felt that day. Here's our list, in honor of those innocent and brave souls lost on the most tragic day in recent American history.

Mark McGuinn – “More Beautiful Today”

Written by Mark and his drummer on the way back to Nashville from California after the attacks in New York and Washington on September 11 ten years ago, The song takes a hopeful approach to life after America lost its innocence and the song is still as good now as it was then.

Alan Jackson – “Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)”

This is just an epic piece of art and while cynics will say Alan turned America’s grief of 9-11 into the best-selling and biggest single of his career, I think it’s a song with immense heart and even if it did pay his bills for much of the last decade, it’s a song worth being heard over and over again and plainly said what we all were thinking and feeling at that time.

Aaron Tippin – “Where The Stars and Stripes And The Eagle Fly”

One of the best patriotic anthems of the past decade, I’d love to have this song become the ‘second national anthem’ instead of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA.”

Joey + Rory – “To Say Goodbye”

This song talks about the pain of losing a loved one to the attacks that day and even though it’s been ten years, I’m sure some are still feeling like the narrator of this song today. “It ain’t that we can’t let them go, it’s that we never got to say goodbye.

Brooks & Dunn – “Only In America”

This song became a big hit after September 11th 2001 but was written and recorded prior to the terrible day. It’s a strong reminder of what America stands for and why we were able to come together and help our neighbors out and become a better country because of it.

Five For Fighting – “Superman”

While not a country song, “Superman (It’s Not Easy)” became one of the biggest post 9-11 hits for good reason, as it reminded people that our local heroes like firemen and policemen are still just that, men and women, not superheroes.

Lee Greenwood – “God Bless The USA”

While I’m very tired of hearing this song played at sporting events as if it was “God Bless America” or something, I can see how it became a chest-pumping anthem again after 9-11-01 and it will undoubtedly be played a lot this weekend and the next week or so.

Bruce Springsteen – “The Rising”

Another song that’s not a country song, it’s a rousing 9-11 tribute and one worthy of being on the list here.

Toby Keith – “Courtesy of the Red White and Blue”

Perhaps the most controversial song on this list, the song was written after the events of 9-11 and certainly earned Toby Keith a lot of press (good and bad) about the song’s intentions and “Schoolyard-style” lyrics. Regardless, the song deserves a place here.
