Coldwater Jane - Marionette

Coldwater Jane released a strong first single called "Bring On The Love" that had us proclaiming the duo as one to watch in 2010. While it took a while, they finally have their debut album out. Read on to see what we think of it!

They had attitude and spirit a la Miranda Lambert or some of Lady Antebellum’s best songs but Coldwater Jane (sisters Brandon Jane and Leah Crutchfield) found themselves without the big breakout hit they needed and, quite frankly, deserved to have.

So it was a pleasant surprise to find out that Coldwater Jane was releasing Marionette. While the great single starts off the record with a stunning sense of urgency and bewilderment over the fact that the world seems to be fragmented, it is the following tracks on Marionette that truly showcase the talent Coldwater Jane possesses

“Devil Train,” “You’re The Best Thing Since Jesus,” “Marionette,” and “Tough As Nails” are amongst the best grouping of tracks as you’re likely to find on any album.

Twirling the knobs on the album are Brandon Jane’s husband Kevin Kadish and Wayne Kirkpatrick (Little Big Town’s co-writer/producer)  and together with Coldwater Jane they really create a wholly unique album of interesting lyrics, melodies and vocal performances.

Some Other standouts on Marionette include “What Now?” – a song about being ready for when things start to go the way you had always dreamed them to – and the rockin’ record closing “Mississippi Mud,” a ‘tude-filled track about going after what you want in life rather than ‘settle’ for what everyone else seems to settle for, something I can relate to.

Only announced as a release a few weeks ago, Coldwater Jane’s Marionette is on-par with recent releases by Sunny Sweeney, Connie Smith and the Pistol Annies, proving that while the guys may be getting all the headlines and sales in country music, the ladies are delivering fantastic collections of music that will likely land on several best-of lists for 2011.
