Craig Morgan - "This Ol' Boy"

After building his career to Gold and platinum status with Broken Bow Records, Craig Morgan recorded one album with BNA Records before moving to new label Black River Entertainment. Does this new single suggest that the Opry star will return to the top of the charts?

Interestingly, Craig's in the same position he was in 2002 when he'd just joined Broken Bow: on a small indie label that hasn't really charted much of anything yet. "This Ole Boy" has almost nothing in common with his Broken Bow breakthrough "Almost Home" (which I thought he'd never top until he released "Every Friday Afternoon"), but at the same time, it's a move back away from the strident sound he's been forging lately. I think it took me about 30 seconds to recognize it as yet another offering from the Peach Pickers, as it has that charming, "country boy" feel to it. It's not a very original idea, but it's very well-executed, and both Craig and the production are well-matched to the Peach Pickers' summery sound.

Craig Morgan can be a great singer when he's not screaming, and in particular, he excels at "country boy" songs that are a little more organic and authentic than most while still being radio-friendly. Although he didn't write "This Ole Boy," it fits well alongside "That's What I Love About Sunday," "Little Bit of Life" or "International Harvester." The Peach Pickers are a surefire way to get a hit, so I can't possibly see "This Ole Boy" missing.
