Blake Shelton - "God Gave Me You"

Blake Shelton's last single "Honey Bee" has undoubtedly become the biggest hit of his career both in terms of how much it was played on the radio and sales-wise. Read on to find out what we have to say about this song, the follow-up single from Red River Blue.

I've been a walking heartache,

I've made a mess of me.

The person that I've been lately

Ain't who I wanna be.

You stay here right beside me,

Watch as the storm blows through,

And I need you.

Chorus:

God gave me you for the ups and downs.

God gave me you for the days of doubt.

For when I think I've lost my way,

There are no words here left to say.

It's true, God gave me you.

The lyrics are very strong with clever turns of phrase in the second verse but the one thing that may drag country fans down a little bit is the melody, which isn’t all that different from Dave Barnes original version, with a drum machine still hangin’ in the melody and with mandolins in the mix of verses before the power ballad chorus above kicks in. Yes, it is tenuously country melodically but Blake Shelton sings the hell out of the song with passionate vocals and while I would have loved to have heard “God Gave Me You” with more fiddles, steel guitars and mandolins, I can forgive the melody presented here as it does end up a secondary part of the song, behind the strong vocal delivery of the lyrics.

With “God Gave Me You” already storming the top 30 of the charts and with Red River Blue debuting at #1 this week, it certainly seems as if Blake Shelton is well on his way to another CMA Male Vocalist of the Year award and this song certainly is a strong showcase for that.
