New Artist Spotlight: Marlee Scott

Marlee Scott has been making some waves recently with her debut single "Beautiful Maybe." In this exclusive article, Marlee talks to Roughstock about the single, her radio tour and upcoming album and much, much more.

One newcomer who has made a lot of noise on Country Radio in 2011 is Canadian newcomer Marlee Scott. The Ontario native seems to be enjoying every step along the way, including the radio tour to promote her latest single, “Beautiful Maybe.”

“It’s been so much fun getting to meet everybody,” she says. “These are the people that play your music, and help make you as artists, and introduce you to the fans. That is so important, because it’s the fans that make you as artists. It’s been really cool meeting them and getting to play the new music for people, and hear what they think,” she tells Roughstock.com. Getting to see a new country also has quite a bit of allure. “Of course, being from Canada and getting to go across America and see all the different states has been really neat for me, as well.”

One of her favorite stops along the way was on the eastern seaboard of the United States. “We were in Norfolk, VA. I really love that place,” she says with a smile. “I’m an ocean lover. My parents are from the east coast of Canada, and ocean saltwater flows in my veins. I love being on the coast, and being on the ocean. It was so beautiful. I definitely enjoyed parts of Florida and parts of California. I’m a big Pacific Northwest lover, so being up in Seattle and Portland, as well.”

As excited as she is to be traveling around the U.S., Scott is thrilled to be out promoting a song that she is very passionate about. “It’s a song that talks about hopes and dreams, and has a positive outlook on life, and the possibilities of what life has. I feel lucky to have gotten the chance to record such a great song,” she says.

Marlee feels very humbled to record a song from three of Nashville’s most respected tunesmiths, Marcus Hummon, Tia Sellers, and Tania Hancheroff. “Marcus is great. He’s such a wonderful person with such a big heart. He wrote ‘Born To Fly’ and ‘Bless The Broken Road,; which were such huge songs. Then, of course, Tia co-wrote “I Hope You Dance,” and Tania is such a great writer.”

One of the things that appealed to Scott about “Beautiful Maybe” was the heartfelt lyrics. “I’m a big believer in a great song. Whatever genre it is, a great song is a great song,”

She also elaborated on some of her influences. “Keith Urban has been a big influence on my music and my stage show. He’s so passionate about what he does and his guitar playing, and everything like that. I love Lady Antebellum and their music, as well as their writing ability. I really look up to Miranda Lambert, as well. I think she’s very talented. I think back to music as a kid that my mom would listen to, and there’s music like Trisha Yearwood, the Mavericks, and Mary Chapin Carpenter, so it varies as far as artists. In other genres, I really like Bryan Adams. I’m a huge fan of his as well.”

As someone who doesn’t live in Nashville, Roughstock asked Scott what she thinks sets Music City apart from other cities. “There’s so much music and talent in this town, from the writers to the musicians to the producers. It’s crazy how much talent in this town that you can access. That’s what I love about it. There are so many talented people in this town that come together. There’s nowhere else that is like that.”

Scott is watching the success of the single, and also working on her first album. When asked about a possible release date, she said that “We’re in the studio kind of on and off. We’re hoping for a release sometime in mid-Fall, hopefully.”

Getting the album out is important to Scott, but not as important as getting the album right. “My manager and I have said that we want the album to be basically a record of singles. We want each track to be as good as it can be, where people will say ‘That could be a single. That could be a single. That could be a single.’ It is like having a child. It’s your baby. It’s your project. You’ve worked on it for a long time, and it all comes together.”

She just completed a video for the song, which was directed by Wes Edwards, known for his work with Jason Aldean and Trace Adkins. “It was cool to see the vision of the song come together. We have a cute little boy who looks like Superman in the video, and he’s such a character. We were out on a farm in Franklin, Tennessee. I joked that I was on a vacation with ticks. Being from Canada, we don’t have ticks there. It’s too cold, so I freaked out a little between takes,” she says with a laugh.

Scott will be gearing up for another leg of the radio tour in just a few weeks, but she does have two ways to escape the stress of the music business when she gets a chance. As an accomplished equestrian, Scott loves nothing more than to ride her horses. She says it enables her to clear her mind. “When I think of riding, that’s what I think of – the fact that it is an escape from the rest of the world. That’s what I miss the most about growing up in Alberta is giving up riding and showing. My mom said she would keep up my horse. She’s riding my horse now. When I do get home, I do get to ride. It’s such a wonderful way to escape from the world and think about nothing.”

Then, there’s one more passion for the lovely songstress. She has a healthy addiction, or maybe you could call it an obsession. She loves peanut butter.

“Ahhh, I love it so much,” she says with the same amount of passion a woman might have if Pitt or Clooney passed in front of her. “I grew up and I have always loved it. I really loved Kraft Peanut butter, which you can’t get in the states. You have to get it in Canada. Sometimes my mom and dad will put together these care packages, and they’ll put some in it. If I go home, I’ll always bring it back. I love it so much. It’s so good with everything. I have a problem. I honestly do. I told my manager that we’ve been out on the radio tour, and I’ve lost a couple of pounds. I think it’s because I haven’t been eating peanut butter.”

As a PB fan myself, I can’t argue! It’s as smooth as her music, which I think many ears are going to be hearing soon!
