I’ve been saying for a while now that I think that country music could really benefit for an influx of well-written, rhythmic tunes and while Walker Hayes “Why Wait For Summer” almost got there, Luke Bryan’s new single “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” becomes the first country single to actually deliver on the premise that’s been in my head. You see, I knew that if an artist could execute this kind of song right, it would be an instant smash hit.
And that's exactly what "Country Girl (Shake It for Me)" is. Yes, the tune is a 'ditty.' Yes, it talks about the female 'rear;' Yes, it’s animalistic in parts and it is sure to remind some of "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk." And sure, it's most definitely a song for the ladies. But despite all of this, the song still screams hit to me and it's downright charming, as all Luke Bryan up-tempo tunes have been. He's just a likeable guy, even when he's singing a song about one of two areas of a women's anatomy that is sure to drive men, like the 'narrator' of this tune, wild.
With all of that said, the song delivers everything radio could want out of a single and it finally delivers that rhythmic promise that I so have been looking for out of a country artist and honestly, I think this is just the tip of the iceberg that was really started about a decade ago by a little song called "Mrs. Steven Rudy" by a singer named Mark McGuinn. Country music was seemingly not ready for this kind of rhythmic song (outside of the outlier given here) but now it's ripe for it and Luke Bryan certainly delivers.
