New Artist Spotlight: Lucy Angel Are A Triple Threat

Lucy Angel, a new trio signed to a new label in Nashville have tight harmonies, drop dead looks and a ton of stage presence.  In this profile, get to know the mother and daughters trio a little bit more through their personalities and their new self-titled EP.

Comprised of Lindsay, Emily, and mother Kate Anderton, the ladies have been making noise at radio as of late with their latest single, “Only Woman Left,” from their self-titled EP that is turning heads as well. The trio is excited about the impact their music is making. “It’s been a while, and we’re very anxious about getting the music out there,” said Lindsay. The song definitely offers the three to showcase their rich family harmony, she added. “That was kind of what sold us on the song—how it starts off with three part harmony with the ‘oohs.’ Sarah Buxton and Anthony Smith wrote the song, and Sarah was doing the demo, and I got to sing some harmonies on it, but she never cut it.”

That opened the door for Lucy Angel, which has worked out quite well, according to Kate. “When we heard it, the oohs were definitely the selling point, and of course, the three part harmony,” she said, as Emily added “We thought to ourselves, ‘That’s so cool. We like that!”

Another track from the EP that is garnering some well-deserved attention is the beautiful “I’ll Be Your Whiskey.” The track is one of the most-unique songs the trio has recorded, said Lindsay. “I liked the vibe of it. I was hoping that we captured that in the studio, and I think we did,” she said. Emily added that “I think it’s the most different sounding track on the EP, which I love about it.” The thing that appealed to Kate about the song the most was the “haunting harmonies, and the production is so cool. I love the production.”

Speaking of the production of the project, that credit has to go to renowned Nashville tunesmith Anthony Smith, who manned the controls for the EP. Working with the writer of such hits as “Cowboys Like Us” and “Kristofferson” was nothing short of a dream come true, according to Emily. “It’s an amazing experience, watching him work,” she said, while Lindsay admitted that seeing the respect that he is given in the studio could be quite intimidating. “He’s so well-respected because he is also a musician, a writer, an artist, and also a producer. It’s cool to see the camaraderie between him and the musicians as he’s in the studio,” though she is quick to stress “He’s not a drill sergeant.”

Kate wholeheartedly agrees with that assessment, saying that “He’s great to work with. He’s really laid back, and the parts that he hears in his head are amazing. To know what was going on there would be amazing,” she admits.

The EP is chock-full of hits to be, but take a special listen to “Color Love Blue,” which in the opinion of this writer, will break your heart. Lindsay’s lead is jaw-dropping, and the harmony is spellbinding. Smith’s arrangement of the song brings to mind some of the gorgeous balladry of Tammy Wynette or Barbara Mandrell from the 1970s.

To promote the release, as well as all things Lucy Angel---just like most musical acts these days, the trio has turned to the web in a big way. “We have a super cool thing on our YouTube channel,” says Emily, “which you can get to if you go to LucyAngel.com, you can go to the YouTube button. We have a web series called “Lucy Angel On Safari,” and we upload a new video every Monday. They’re just sort of fun little adventures that document our experience out on the road.”

There are also a few other special ‘webisodes,’ according to Lindsay. “We did a Thanksgiving special, where Emily and I had these rolls that we make. It’s a tradition, so we did a little ‘How-to’ video on how to make them.”

Food also figures into one of Lucy Angel’s favorite ways of giving back. The trio has made a habit of collecting food at their shows for those less fortunate----which, according to Kate, sadly seems to be a growing number.

“There are tough times across the country,” she said.  “We were trying to think of some way to help out, and food is one of the basic necessities. Food banks are struggling across the country. I don’t know if people understand-----because everybody is tight right now. A little bit of money that you can donate---one dollar supplies four meals, and so many of the people are children that are missing their meals. These organizations are doing such great work. The Second Harvest here in Nashville is an amazing organization, and they provide so many meals for children over the weekends and summer break.” The recent showcase at 12th & Porter served as a fund-raiser for the organization. “We just wanted to raise awareness and encourage others to give if you can,” expresses Lindsay.

On the horizon for the ladies includes more concert dates, more radio stops to promote the single and EP, which is available now. “The EP is out now, on iTunes, as well as our website,” says Lindsay. They hope fans will like the music, as well as the packaging. “If you’re a music fan that still likes the physical copy with the art, it turned out really cool,” says Emily.
