The chorus says:

It’s not to hard to see that the man Eric Church is singing about here is a man who doesn’t think he needs to live in that rural, slower paced life that he tried to run from so long. It’s certainly a song that is relatable on many levels, as anyone from a small ‘little square town’ was either the person in the song or knew somebody who is or was that person. The interesting musical accompaniment in the chorus and then the loud guitars are sure to turn off some people but I have a feeling that anyone who likes Charlie Daniels or Hank Jr.’s more rowdy tunes will certainly dig this song and you know what, the more I listen to it, the more I like it.
Eric Church has built up his career doing things more or less his way and has come out of it the other side as an ACM Top New Solo Vocalist nominee with a group of loyal fans waiting on baited-breath for this song and the album it’s from to come out. “Homeboy” is yet another step towards carving out a unique artistic identity that leaves fans at radio knowing when they’re listening to an Eric Church song.
