Sugarland - "Little Miss"

For their latest single country music's power duo shifts from the earworm irreverent fun of "Stuck Like Glue" to an uplifting and downright inspirational single "Little Miss."  Does this single have enough to suggest that the band's winning formula will continue?

For fans who thought Sugarland would get ‘all reggae’ or ‘rap’ going forward, they really don’t even touch those styles of music here. Instead they stay largely in the inspirational rootsy and acoustic-based country/pop that isn’t that far removed from the stuff on their first album.  The melody is inviting and the lyrics are some of the duo’s best of the album.  The sound does get bigger after that first verse when segueing into the chorus and there is a bit of an 80s pop/rock power ballad feel to the whole thing but as a kid who grew up in that decade, it’s alright by me.

The whole lyrical story is tight and finds Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush telling a ‘little miss’ that’s it’s ok to give more than what you give because eventually, you will get more than you give.  This is a song that’s all about not letting yourself get down due to a bad relationship and for anyone who has loved and lost only to love again, they’ll relate to this song about the incredible machine that is the human heart and its capacity to love.

Sugarland’s brand of music may not be for everyone but when they release great earworms like “Stuck Like Glue” and downright inspirational fare like “Little Miss” it’s hard to not like the direction the duo is going in, even if they lose some traditionalist-leaning country fans along the way.
