Steel Magnolia - "Last Night Again"

With "Last Night Again," Steel Magnolia is sending their third single to country radio after Top 5 "Keep On Lovin' You" and Top 25 "Just By Being You (Halo and Wings)."  Does writer Bobby Peacock think this single has enough to join the former as a big radio hit?

Which brings us to the question: is "Last Night Again" a good single? The short answer? Yes. The production is surprisingly spare, inobtrusive and inspired, emphasizing the syncopated percussion above everything else. As with their last two singles, Joshua Scott Jones and Meghan Linsey split the vocals 50/50. On this song, the shared vocal is a perfect fit to the conversational lyrics, making their real-life chemistry far more evident in this song than it was even on "Keep On Lovin' You." Here, they discuss wanting to reprise the fun they had in that one-night stand and maybe make it more than just a one-night stand. In some ways, I could see this as a sequel to Lady Antebellum's "Lookin' for a Good Time."

Despite the awkward timing of the single release vs. album release, Steel Magnolia should have no trouble recovering from the misfire that was "Just by Being You." "Keep On Lovin' You" is still ubiquitous enough to help with the name recognition, and "Last Night Again" has all the right ingredients for a hit single. Even if it takes 30+ weeks to peak like their debut did, "Last Night Again" should easily be another top 5 hit.
