Josh Thompson - "Won't Be Lonely Long" Single

After seeing his first two singles reach the Top 20, Josh Thompson returns with his third single from the Way Out Here album.  Will this song manage to bring the newcomer his first Top 10 hit? Find out what Kyle Ward thinks about the song's chances in this single review.

After a pair of modest successes with his first two singles, Columbia newcomer Josh Thompson brings us his latest single, “Won’t Be Lonely Long.”  The song starts out slowly with an acoustic rendition of the couple’s breakup, but then launches into full on party mode as put her far behind.  This isn’t exactly a groundbreaking way to approach a breakup song, but Thompson delivers the style well enough.  However, where Thompson’s tune lags behind others who have covered similar territory, notably Dierks Bentley’s “How Am I Doin’” and Steve Holy’s “Brand New Girlfriend,” is that it lacks vengeance.

The song lacks the sharp tongued wit of Bentley’s tune and settles into a comfortable, if not overly safe mode, detailing his escapades in rather generic way.  The song also leaves you wondering if he wouldn’t have been happier partying and trolling for women all along (in contrast to Bentley’s song, which is clearly aimed at revenge).   What it all means is that this is really just a party/drinking/promiscuity song that disguises itself as a breakup song.

Despite its deficiencies, it’s still an infectious listen that’s not over-produced, has a sound beat, and will be a welcomed sing along during the sometimes ballad heavy winter months.  The song should also offer Thompson his best chance at commercial success to date, as I think top 10 is very much in play for this song.
