New Artist Spotlight: Troy Olsen

Newcomer Troy Olsen already has a Top 40 hit with "Summer Thing" in addition to a new single in "Good Hands." In this interview, Troy discusses his new EP, his influences and his time on the Country Throwdown Tour among many other topics.

With the Top 40 hit "Summer Thing" having served Troy Olsen well as a nice introduction into him and his music, he has now released the single "Good Hands" to radio and released a four song EP to digital music stores.  In this interview Troy Olsen discusses his background, his influences and much much more.

Marc Erickson: Where are you from? How did you get interested in country music?

Troy Olsen: I'm from southern Arizona. Country music is what my family listened to. We all loved it so that's what was always on.

Marc: Who are some of the artists who have helped shape you into the artist you are now?

Troy: I got my first guitar because of Dwight Yoakam. He was a huge influence on me. I love Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, and all the great old Country music.

Marc: In addition to securing your record deal with EMI Records Nashville you’ve also scored some songwriter credits along the way.  How cool is it for you to have some of your peers record your songs their own albums?

Troy: It's the highest compliment an artist can give a songwriter. It means they love it....and that's what a songwriter wants most!!!

Marc: You toured this past summer on the Country Throwdown Tour.  How great was that for you to be a part of such a unique experience for country music fans?

Troy: It was like a huge traveling summer camp circus! It's so rare for so many acts to be traveling together for so many weeks. It gave us a chance to get to know each other and love each others music. There were nights on our bus where thirty artists and songwriters were crammed in the front lounge passing a guitar and singing their hearts out. I remember thinking that those nights were some that I will never forget.

Marc: Did you take away anything by watching some of the other acts on that tour perform that you can maybe use in your own performances in the future?

Troy: I liked Jack Ingram's energy. His shows were really fun to watch from backstage. Little Big Town was really cool and also Eric Church. They are all such great entertainers.

Marc: Your EP has been released digitally how cool is it for you to have your music out in the marketplace for the fans?

Troy: It's great to know that people can buy it and start to see what my music is about. I have been on the road for five months meeting so many fans and making so many new friends it will nice to see how they like the recorded versions of the songs they have heard us play live.

Marc: How has the internet helped you develop your fan base?

Troy: It is such a great way to stay more connected with the fans. Without the internet it would be nearly impossible to reach as many people.

Marc: What would you like to say to fans who may be learning of Troy Olsen the artist for the first time?

Troy: I would say that I would love for them to come see me on the road when we hit their town. I'll buy you a beer!
