Jeff Cook - Shaken...Not Stirrred

Alabama's founding member Jeff Cook has been working in Country Music for years now but after a few years in 'retirement,' he's back with a new band.  Does this album have enough good stuff to recommend it?

To most people Jeff Cook was the lead guitarist/fiddler for the country super group Alabama.  With nothing to prove thanks to over 78 million albums sold as a founding member of the biggest country band of all-time, Jeff Cook is now at the point in his career where he is making music just to make music.  Leading his own band called “Jeff Cool and the All-Star Goodtime Band,” Jeff’s current music is a mixture of fun-loving music that is meant for nothing but a good time.

This is evident by the fantactic lead-off track to Jeff Cook and the AGB’s latest album Shaken…Not Stirred.   It’s a traditional country-laced mid-tempo ballad that drives home Cook’s strong voice which can even mimic Willie Nelson at times. Jeff and the AGB tackle the classic Dave Clark Five tune “Because” while “Misery Loves Company” is a horn-soaked blues tune.  “I’ll Give You That” will appeal to fans of the Mavericks and soulful country pop of Ronnie Milsap.

“Lonely Teardrops” will recall all those time-life commercials that play on late night TV about 50s and 60s cd collections.  This is a cover of Jackie Wilson’s classic from 1958 and it’s followed by “Dreamer Gone Blind,” a stone country ballad.  “Don’t Fish & Drive” is a fun southern rock and country number which sizzles and smokes with pure unadulterated fun.  “Fire” is a duet with Danielle Peck and the two simply show off great chemistry on this Pointer Sisters classic.

Yes, Shaken…Not Stirred isn’t for everyone but if you’re a fan of Alabama or great bands you should find much to like about the album.
