Troy Olsen - "Summer Thing"

EMI Nashville's first signee is Troy Olsen, co-writer of Blake Shelton's recent Top Ten hit "I'll Just Hold On" as well as a Tim McGraw album cut. Now behind the mic himself, Olsen brings us "Summer Thing," his debut single for the newly-formed label.  Is it a good start?

The song starts off with some fairly interesting details such as the marina, followed by the fairly obvious observation "that days are getting longer and shorts are getting shorter." Beyond that, the lyrics touch on a couple other unusual ideas ("cerveza"/"raise 'em" is a gem) as well as the more obvious bonfires and beaches. It's a calmer song overall; the melody is easy and breezy, Olsen's voice is calm and friendly, but at times it just feels a little too relaxed. Compared to the laid-back but still lively "Toes" or the sultry and sexy "Groovy Little Summer Song," it isn't quite as good, but it still has enough going for it.

Summer songs can be a dime a dozen, but if they're well-presented, then there's no reason not to have just one more song celebrating all of the things that make summer fun. "Summer Thing" seems like a strong enough song to announce the arrival of both a new artist and a new label. Even if it ends up peaking in December like Craig Morgan's "Bonfire" did.
