In his excellent 2009 single "People Are Crazy," Billy Currington sang the immortal line "God is great, beer is good and people are crazy." This time around, after a formulaic (but still ear-pleasing) diversion into "country boy" territory with "That's How Country Boys Roll," Currington is back to the "beer is good" part of the equation. I can't say that I disagree with him.
The song (Written by Troy Jones, who co-wrote "People Are Crazy" with Bobby Braddock) opens with a simple enough declaration: "I wasn't born for diggin' deep holes / I'm not made for paving long roads / I ain't cut out to climb high line poles / But I'm pretty good at drinkin' beer." Matched to a tasteful, restrained production and easygoing melody, this delcaration rings very true when Currington lazily drawls out each word. Although it's a simple list song (I can't do x, y or z, but I'm pretty good at drinking beer), it's at least a very tight, focused list song with a winner of a hook. At times, Currington recalls the laid-back charm of Tom T. Hall (whose "I Like Beer" this song often parallels) or even Alan Jackson.
As I said in my last review, "That's How Country Boys Roll" was an unusual foray into pre-fab country music from a man not usually known for playing by Nashville's rules. With "Beer," Currington is back to offering yet another pleasing, low-key charmer in a rapidly growing repertoire. Coming off the momentum of a #2 and two straight chart-toppers (yeah, I follow only Billboard), "Beer" should go down smoothly and easily at country radio. Because smooth and easy are what Currington does best.
