Gretchen Wilson - "Work Hard, Play Harder"

With the first release off of her own Redneck Records label, Gretchen Wilson presents this single, a song that recalls "Redneck Woman." Will fans react to this single the way that they reacted to Gretchen's first and biggest hit?  Should the song even be a hit?

Five years ago, Gretchen Wilson came from virtually outta nowhere to become an instant star with a song that resonated with female country music fans. Now free of a committee approach to releasing her music, Wilson returns to the airwaves with “Work Hard, Play Harder,” (listen here) a song which may very well reconnect her with not just the female fans who got “Redneck Woman,” but the male fans who enjoyed some of her other tunes like “Here For The Party.”  As the first release from her new record label Redneck Records, Gretchen is certainly hoping for just that.

While not quite the firebrand that “Redneck Woman” was, “Work Hard, Play Harder” rocks as much as it rolls and the song certainly is something that the country music audience can relate to; that is that you work hard to earn what you get but don’t forget to live a little and play.  All of this is said over a raucous melody with swirling fiddles and southern rock guitars.  In other words, it’s exactly the perfect kind of song to play while driving to and from work or getting ready to go out on the weekend.

The music isn’t rocket science and it shouldn’t be.  It should make you feel something, and fortunately for Gretchen Wilson, “Work Hard, Play Harder” does.  It’s a fun song that plays well to repeated listens.

Songwriters: Gretchen Wilson, John Rich & Vicky McGehee
