It's a sad day for country music today as the legendary country rockabilly and honky tonk star Carl Smith passed away at his Nashville-area home.  The singer, mostly retired since the 1970s, was preceded in death by his wife, country singer Goldie Hill Smith in 2005.

Known for his classic hits like “Let Ole Mother Nature Have Her Way,” “Loose Talk,” “You Are The One” and “Are You Teasing Me,” Carl Smith was one of the 1950’s biggest stars as he scored over 30 Top 10 hits during the decade.  Carl is the father of country singer/songwriter Carlene Carter, a product of his four-year marriage to June Carter (before she married Johnny Cash).    He was also active as a music publisher, founding Cedarwood/Driftwood Music, a major Nashville pubbery, in 1954.

Carl Smith was inducted into the Country Music Hall of fame in 2003, an event which allowed the immensely private singer a brief return to the spotlight.  He is survived by Carlene Carter and his three children with Goldie, Lorri Lynn, Carl Jr. and Larry Dean Smith.
