The Best Singles of 2009: Gloriana - "Wild At Heart" (#36)

It's easy to look at this good-looking young quartet as either a younger 'clone' of Little Big Town or just some fresh-faced pop group but when you actually listen to their song "Wild At Heart," the band's talent erases all those condescending thoughts.

When “Wild At Heart” first came out in early 2009, I instantly fell for the song.  While very pop-leaning, the song showcased a talented new quartet that was worth getting excited about.  This song,  originally released by Gloriana and their fledgling label Emblem Records  when they were not affiliated with Warner Brothers, the song managed to make a memorable run up into the Top 15 of the charts and then, inexplicably, it stalled.

Even as I moved on to other songs, I kept coming back to the song.  So, despite radio’s reluctance to make this single a Top 10 hit, it became one of the best singles that I heard in all of 2009. The lyrics and melody are joyful, the vocal harmonies are tight and the production is smooth without ever getting too overwhelming and the ‘country’ instruments like the dobro and mandolin are clearly audible in the mix.  The song was just an earworm. All of this is enough to make “Wild At Heart” Roughstock’s 36th best single of 2009.
