The Best Country Singles of 2009: 15-11

Here they are, our favorite songs from 15-11.  What do you think?  Do you agree? do you think some songs are higher or lower than they should be?  Check back Wednesday and Thursday to find out how we rated the Top 10 singles of 2009.

Yesterday we gave you Five of the Top 20 of our Best Country Singles of 2009 and we continue our countdown this week with the next five on our list.

15. People Are Crazy – Billy Currington

The first thing that grabbed me was the melody and that is a truly unique situation for me as typically a voice and/or lyrics get my attention.  The melody is simple, the lyrics are sung in a traditionally-minded cadence and the imagery is easy to understand.  The lyrics may have some plot holes, but when something sounds and feels this good, what’s wrong with a silly lyric.  And it’s not unfeasible for a millionaire to give away his money to someone they barely know over their own family, particularly if the family felt entitled to it.  –Matt Bjorke

14. I Told You So – Carrie Underwood/Randy Travis

Randy Travis scored a hit with this song over 20 years ago and for Underwood to not only record it but release it as a single was a great surprise.  One of the purest country vocalists currently working, Underwood was born to sing in a traditional style so it’s great when we get to hear her do so.  Adding Randy Travis in a later-recorded duet was a nice touch that somehow worked well.  Carrie, please consider doing a whole album of ‘covers’ or at least songs that sound like this, you might be surprised how many people enjoy it. –Matt Bjorke

13. All I Ask For Anymore – Trace Adkins

Trace Adkins knows about how priorities in life change. Ranging from big milestones such as a game-winning homerun, to the challenges that come with raising a family, Adkins sings about how life has changed. The single “All I Ask For Anymore” was a beautifully constructed ballad that has Adkins singing about how his family is the only thing that matters at this stage in his life. It was nice to see him show a softer, more sensitive side and the song is reminiscent of his former hit “You’re Gonna Miss This.” “All I Ask For Anymore” helped put Adkins back on the map in the country music industry and know more people will remember him for his songs, rather than his appearance on “The Celebrity Apprentice.”  - Audrey Snyder

12. To Say Goodbye – Joey + Rory

The first time that I heard this song, I literally cried.  Call me a weak man if you must but I’m not afraid to admit that this song hit home that way.  Funerals are for the living, not for the deceased, they’re for celebrating the life of the one we knew and loved and like a funeral, this song is about the living.  It’s about that lack of closure when somebody unexpectedly dies.  That lack of closure is something that hurts us for a long time and it does indeed make it hard to let go when you don’t get the chance to say goodbye to them.  The vocal performance from Joey Martin and her husband Rory Feek is remarkable and this song touches my heart.

11. Long After I’m Gone – Big Kenny

Everyone knows about Big Kenny and John Rich and their successful duo, Big & Rich. But Big Kenny as a solo artist—now that was something that was intriguing. When Big Kenny’s first solo was released in August, “Long After I’m Gone” had the upbeat rhythm that made the song go over well with country music fans. The song allowed Big Kenny to prove to any remaining critics that he is more than just a showman with good guitar licks and his vocals were a perfect fit for the song. Big Kenny has always been known as a person who enjoys life and his message to “Love Everybody” carries through in the single which deals with living life in the moment and leaving a legacy full memories. – Audrey Snyder
