Kellie Pickler Gives Back on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

With her career now firmly established, the former American Idol contestant recently helped build a new home for a family on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.  In a brief interview with Roughstock, Kellie discusses the episode, her recent hits and her tour

Matt Bjorke: How did it feel to not only get your first Top 10 hit with “Best Days of Your Life?”

Kellie: Oh it’s amazing.  Taylor and I wrote that song a couple of years ago. Neither of us knew if either of us would record it, let alone release it as a single.  It was really cool to go into the studio with her and record it and then shoot a video and to have it be my first top 10 was very cool.

Matt: What made you such a believer in your current single to get it put on your second album as well as your first one?

Kellie:  I felt the first time that I heard “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You,” I fell in love with the lyrics.  I love the song, the melody and it was the favorite song on my first record so I was really upset that it didn’t get a chance to be a single.  I really went in and fought for it to be a single on the second album and I’m glad I got my way (laughs).

Matt: How much fun was it to shoot the video for the song?

Kellie: It was so much fun.  We got to go to the Dominican Republic and it was so beautiful there!  There were wild peacocks running around everywhere.  The air was so beautiful, you can breathe and it’s so pure.  I hope to go back and vacation there because 3 days wasn’t nearly enough! (laughs)

Matt: How much fun did you have touring with your best friend Taylor Swift this year?

Kellie: It was wonderful, it was great.  There were sold out shows everywhere, we’re very excited about 2010 and the extension of the tour.  I think it will be even better than this year!

Matt: How did you get involved with the folks at Extreme Makeover: Home Edition?

Kellie: I told my management that I’d really love to be a part of that show because there are very few shows that are like that, that are about giving back and about helping other people.  And that’s what life’s about, giving back, embracing one another, helping out one another, loving each other.  I love that about the show and that everyone’s heart and soul is in the right place, I love that their intentions are beautiful and their motives behind the show.  So when you’re able to take part in something like that, something so magical, you’d be a fool not to do it.  So I’ve been blessed to be able to do it.

Matt: Would you do another episode if you were asked?

Kellie:  I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Matt: What can you tell me about the episode?

Well, I’m very, very exicted about it airing Sunday (on ABC).  I hope everybody can tune in to it, I think it’s gonna be one of the best shows (this year). I couldn’t imagine this having been given to another family.  I mean, this family was so amazing, so beautiful and their story was completely heartbreaking.  So to finally be able to build a house that was functional for them, in their situation.  It’s so rewarding.  We were rewarded with so many smiles, so to see them smile when the buss moved and they saw the house, it was life-changing and such a blessing.
